Project Description

Varina on the James

We were contracted to apply for a Virginia Waters Protection Permit for surface water withdrawal on the picturesque, 800-acre Varina on the James Farm in Henrico County, VA. The project resulted in the irrigation of approximately 570 acres of prime Virginia farmland for the commercial production of corn, soybeans and wheat.

Services included irrigation pivot design, crop irrigation demand, alternatives analysis and avoidance and minimization of impacts to existing aquatic features, and a drought management plan. Irrigated crops can have up to 20-30% higher yields versus non-irrigated crops.

Goals:

  • Permitting of surface water withdrawal
  • Reduce impacts to unavoidable aquatic resources
  • Provide planning for sustainable use of water resources for irrigation
