Position: Environmental Scientist

Pay: Negotiable, up to $70,000 based on experience
Position Description
Ecosystem Services is seeking an Environmental Scientist to support ecological restoration, mitigation banking, nutrient banking, and regulatory compliance projects throughout Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region. This position is primarily office-focused and centered on technical writing, data interpretation, and environmental reporting; however, candidates interested in a hybrid office/field role will also be considered.
The ideal candidate is a strong technical writer with experience preparing monitoring reports, mitigation bank documents, ecological assessments, permit support materials, and related environmental deliverables. Candidates should be comfortable synthesizing field and GIS data, and producing regulator-ready reports.
We are primarily seeking candidates with relevant professional experience in environmental consulting. However, exceptional candidates with less direct experience may also be considered if they demonstrate strong aptitude, technical writing ability, initiative, and a willingness to learn in a fast-paced consulting environment.

Qualifications:
Required
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Ecology, Biology, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 2-5 years of relevant experience preferred; strong entry-level candidates with applicable internship or writing experience may also be considered
- Excellent technical writing and editing skills
Experience with mitigation banking, nutrient banking, stream/wetland restoration, or environmental permitting strongly preferred
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Preferred
- Familiarity with state and federal regulatory frameworks including USACE, DEQ, Section 404/401 permitting
- Proficiency with GIS
Position Responsibilities
- Prepare annual monitoring reports for stream, wetland, and land conversion projects.
- Compile, organize, and interpret environmental field data including vegetation, hydrology, geomorphology, soils, and water quality information
- Coordinate with project managers, staff scientists, engineers, and regulatory agencies to support project development and compliance
- Assist with impact assessments, desktop analyses, and environmental permitting tasks
- Support GIS exhibit preparation, figures, tables, and report formatting
- Maintain organized project documentation and assist with project tracking and submittals
- Participate in occasional field work including monitoring events, stream assessments, wetland delineations, or restoration inspections, depending on candidate interest and project needs

Opportunities for field involvement and project site exposure may be available based on candidate interest and project needs, but field work is not required for the role.
