Project Description

Edith J. Carrier Arboretum at JMU

A stream and wetland restoration project was designed and permitted by Ecosystem Services, LLC to help meet both the MS4 pollutant reduction goals of JMU and aesthetic and educational goals of the Arboretum. Outreach and environmental education was provided to JMU faculty staff, students, and others in the local community to communicate current methods of estimating pollutant loading and reductions but also the current status of Virginia’s stormwater management regulations, the science of fluvial geomorphology and stream restoration, the Chesapeake Bay TMDL, and how this information pertains to our everyday lives. The projected pollutant reductions as result of the restoration design will enable JMU to meet and exceed their entire phosphorus reduction goals for the MS4 permit and in essence save the institution a significant amount of resources.

Goals:

  • Reduce erosion
  • Reduce and remove nutrients
  • Create bedform diversity
  • Improve instream and stream corridor habitat for amphibians, pollinators, and benthic macroinvertebrates
  • Restore surface hydrology
  • Create educational opportunities
  • Improve natural aesthetics
